Researching the Scriptures
My Notes (observations, insights, thoughts, questions, etc.)
The “Right Reason” disciples of Jesus Christ research Scripture is to know God better—allowing Him to transform us as we learn to live well, recognize what’s true, and be willing and able to help and equip others, just as Jesus did for us.
Researching Scripture and studying Scripture are related but not the same.
In Simple Terms:
- Studyingscripture is like reading a letter from a friend to understand what they’re saying and how it relates to you.
- Researchingscripture is like digging deeper to understand why they said it, what was happening at the time, and how it fits into their entire story.
Researching Scripture doesn’t just fill your head—it helps you know God better, it transforms your heart, guides your steps, sharpens your discernment, and equips you to bless others
Practical Ways to Research the Scriptures
Start with Prayer and the Holy Spirit’s Guidance
“Holy Spirit, help me understand and apply Your truth.”
Apply the S.O.A.P.
S – Scripture: Read the passage of scriptures 3 times
- 1st time: read non-stop
- 2nd time: read and underline words or phrases that you don’t know or understand
- 3rd time: read and underline or highlight key phrases or words that stick out to you or that resonate with you.
O – Observation:
- What does it say?
- Who is involved?
- What is happening?
A – Application:
- How does this apply to my life?
- Take Notes and Journal Your Insights (Writing helps solidify what you learn)
- Record key verses, questions, and insights.
- Note how the passage relates to your current situation.
P – Prayer:
- Ask God to help you live out what you’ve learned.
